Is an Everest Base Camp trek on your Bucket List?

Is your soul yearning for the immense power and adventure that lie beneath these three short, sweet syllables?

Everest Base Camp.

Wedged between the Himalayas and the steamy jungles of the Indian plains, Nepal is nirvana for mountain lovers. But Everest is more than just a mountain. And the trail to Base Camp Everest more than just a trek.

You’ll walk among giants and test your limits on this journey on this two-week journey to the top of the world. You’ll revel in the rugged power and majesty of the highest mountain on earth. And you’ll discover just how strong you really are as you climb through the breathtakingly beautiful Himalayas to Everest Base Camp.

If your dreams consist of Sherpas, snow, yaks and yetis, a trek to Everest Base Camp is a journey you need to take. (But less of the yetis, please.)

Everest Base Camp Trek Frequently Asked Questions

Take a look at some of our frequently asked questions for an Everest Base Camp Trek
  • How Hard is the Everest Base Camp Trek?

The walking on the Everest Base Camp trek itself is not difficult day to day, you are always walking on good paths. People struggle because you are walking 12 days back to back.

The distances each day on the way to Everest Base Camp will range between 8km and 13km of trekking per day. This is achievable by anyone with good fitness ability, but the altitude and the back-to-back walking days are what make it harder. With some proper training before you head out on this trip, it is fully achievable by everyone!

Check out our article on ‘Do I need to train for Everest Base Camp?

  • How Long is the Everest Base Camp Trek?

The standard Everest Base Camp Trek takes 12 days and covers 130km of trekking there and back. It takes 8 days to trek to Everest Base Camp and 4 days to get back to Lukla.

Within those 12 days it also allows for 2 days of acclimatisation in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche.

  • How much does a Everest Base Camp Trek Cost?

There are lots of factors when thinking about the cost of an Everest Base Trek. You can do the trek yourself with no guides or porters. You will then book your internal flights to Lukla & pay for your permits, tea houses and food as you go. The other option is to book a trip like ours to Everest Base Camp where everything is already included.

The first option will obviously be cheaper, but when you look at all the costs I think you will be surprised how small the difference is.

Click here to read our article on the breakdown of all costs involved.
  • When is the best time to Trek to Everest Base Camp?

The best time to Trek to Everest Base Camp is either March-May or late September to November. These are the main trekking seasons for the Khumbu region. June to September is the Monsoon season in Nepal and these times are best avoided.

  • Do I need a visa for Everest Base Camp?

Yes, you do need a Visa for Everest Base Camp. You can get a Nepal visa online up to 15 days in advance of your arrival. You can also queue up to get a tourist visa on arrival, but payment must be made in cash, with US dollars being the preferred currency. Applying in advance can reduce the time it takes you to pass through immigration. Visas are available for several lengths of stay at various costs.

  • What Kit do I need for an Everest Base Camp Trek?

If you are already a hiker or a trekker in the UK then you will probably have most of the equipment you need for an Everest Base Camp Trek. There is no specialist equipment required for an Everest Base Camp Trek.

The majority of your equipment will be carried in your duffle bag by the porters. You will also be staying in Tea Houses each night so you will only require a sleeping bag so no camping equipment is required.

  • What's the minimum age requirement for the Everest Base Camp Trek?

Whilst there isn’t an exact minimum age requirement, we tend to only recommend doing Everest Base Camp if you are above the age of 13.

This is with the understanding that anyone under the age of 18 is accompanied at all times throughout the trip by a suitable adult (parent/guardian).
