Do I Need a Visa for Argentina from the UK?

Planning a trip to Argentina from the UK? You’re in for a treat, my friend.

Whether you’re planning on bumbling round the bustling streets of Buenos Aires, hiking the breathtaking landscapes of Patagonia or summitting the incredible Mount Aconcagua, Argentina offers a diverse array of experiences for every adventurer. But before you pack your bags, it’s essential to understand the visa requirements for UK citizens. So what are they?

Visa-Free Travel for UK Citizens

The good news is that UK citizens do NOT need a visa to visit Argentina for short stays. Here are the key details:

Tourist Visits: UK passport holders can enter Argentina for tourism without a visa for up to 90 days.

Business Visits: The same 90-day visa exemption applies to business trips.

Extensions: If you wish to stay longer than 90 days, you can apply for an extension at the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones in Argentina. This extension typically allows for an additional 90 days.

Please note – it’s always worth checking the UK Government travel page for Argentina while you’re planning your trip in case any recent changes have kicked in. You can do that here.

Entry Requirements for Argentina from the UK

So you might not need a visa, but there are still some entry requirements you do need to meet when you travel to Argentina from the UK:

Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry. That’s kinda a given wherever you travel in the world, but you’d be surprised how many people turn up to the airport without enough time left in their passport!

Don’t let that be you – go and check your passport’s expiry date now.

Return Ticket: We’d all love to stay in Argentina for ever, but you should have a return or onward ticket booked before you fly, so you can prove your intent to leave the country within the permitted stay period.

Proof of Funds: It’s rarely checked by authorities, but we always advise our Bucketlisters to have proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay. If only for your own peace of mind!

COVID-19 Considerations

At the time of writing, there are NO Covid restrictions for UK citizens travelling to Argentina. But given the ongoing global health situation, additional entry requirements related to COVID-19 or other issues could potentially crop up. These can include:

Health Declarations: You may need to fill out a health declaration form.

Vaccination Certificates: Proof of COVID-19 vaccination may be required.

Testing: Negative COVID-19 test results might be needed before departure or upon arrival.

It’s crucial to check the latest travel advisories and entry requirements closer to your travel date, as they can change rapidly. Check health requirements for travel to Argentina here.

Staying Longer or Moving Permanently to Argentina

If you plan to stay in Argentina for more than 90 days, to work, study, or move permanently, you’ll need to apply for the appropriate visa or residency permit.

Argentina offers various visa categories, including work visas, student visas, and family reunification visas. These require specific documentation and must be applied for in advance through the Argentine consulate.

Final Tips – insurance, money and consular help while you’re in Argentina

Insurance: Travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any unforeseen circumstances, including health issues and travel disruptions. You can read our ultimate guides to:

Consular Services: In case of emergencies, the British Embassy in Buenos Aires can provide assistance to UK citizens.

Money: In Argentina, you’ll be spending Argentine pesos (ARS). Dining out is quite the treat: a hearty steak dinner at a nice restaurant might set you back around 5,000 pesos (about £15 so quite a bit less than you might pay in the UK), while a casual empanada street snack costs just a few hundred pesos (a couple of quid).
