When Is The Best Time To Climb Mount Aconcagua?

Mount Aconcagua, the highest peak in South America, is a coveted destination for mountaineers and adventurers all over the globe.

Making sure you make the most of your trip, since it’s such an undertaking, is crucial.

A big part of that is figuring out when the ideal time to plan your trip is and that’s something we’ll explore here – hint, we may have a trip that fits the bill perfectly!

But the next step is a bit bigger – choosing when to go and booking it!

You’ll be balancing several factors, from weather conditions to crowd levels, your own schedule, and budget.

Mount Aconcagua aligns with the Southern Hemisphere’s summer, which means from late November to early March is the warmest and calmest time to head up the mountain…

Our TBLC Aconcagua Treks head off in January, which means it gives you the best possible conditions for a comfortable ascent – or certainly as comfortable as it’s going to get!

Is It Best To Climb Mount Aconcagua In Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter?

Spring, which is September-November in Argentina, is not an ideal time to climb Aconcagua. The weather tends to be more unpredictable, with lingering winter conditions making the ascent more challenging and dangerous.

By heading off on your trek out of the busy season, you’re also giving yourself a tougher task to get hold of guides and porters.

As we said previously, summer is the best time to climb Aconcagua. Summer in South America is December-February, which is our winter – the weather more stable, with warmer temperatures and lower wind speeds.

All of which means that it gives you favourable conditions for your trek. In fact, the high season is even tighter than that, between mid-December and late January, which puts our trips right in the sweet spot!

Autumn (March-May) sees a decline in the number of climbers as the weather becomes more unpredictable and colder.

While it is still possible to climb Aconcagua in early March, the conditions are less favourable, and the risk of severe weather increases, though that’s not to say you can’t have favourable conditions!

Winter (June-August) is the least advisable time to climb Aconcagua with extreme cold, heavy snowfall and high winds making a treacherous undertaking – only the absolute most experienced mountaineers with specialist equipment should even consider a winter climb…
