When Is The Best Time To Visit Chile?

Nothing is as enthralling as checking off your bucket list in Chile. From lazing on the idyllic sands of Playa Anakena to hiking to the summit of the Andes, there aren’t as many countries with equally diverse landscapes. For the past few years, Chile has clawed its way up the list of the most popular destinations in the world. And rightfully so, the long and narrow country on the west coast of South America caters to a diverse group of travelers, from adrenaline junkies to nature lovers.

The best season to visit Chile solely depends on which region you are visiting. So, whether you are here for a good hike in the mountains of Santiago or want to go camping in the lush forests, it pays to get the timing right. Here are the most common destinations and the best seasons to visit them.

Best Time to Visit Patagonia

The beautiful Chilean Patagonia has long been an idyllic destination for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. The best season to visit Chilean Patagonia is between October and March, the warmest months. Whereas these are considered winter months in the Northern hemisphere, they are the summer months in the Southern hemisphere with average temperatures of 22°C.

It is also worth noting that the summer season is the most expensive time to visit Patagonia; however, it is a worthwhile experience. In contrast, the winter months are a beacon for budget travelers, but these months present a few risks to safety. During the winter, the idyllic Chilean Patagonia is fickle, with winds hitting record speeds of up to 120 km/hr.

Best Time To Visit Santiago

If you seek a laid-back experience, then head to the country’s cultured capital. From incomparable nightlife to a mouth-watering culinary experience, Santiago rightfully ranks among the country’s prime destinations. However, whereas many consider the breathtaking Santiago a year-round destination, timing remains pivotal to having a wonderful trip to Chile’s capital. The summer months of December to February, with temperatures peaking at 30°C, is the best season but draws so many crowds. And booking in advance is a good way of managing your budget.

If you seek a memorable ski adventure in the nearby mountains, plan your trip between the winter season of June and August, with temperatures averaging 16°C. The winter season isn’t as eventful because Santiago’s other attractions remain closed. However, you can’t go wrong with the autumn months of March and April in Chile’s Winelands. From taking postcard-worthy pictures of fall foliage to unforgettable wine-tasting tours, the Winelands are a trip you will cherish long after you leave Chile.

Best Time To Visit The Atacama Desert

Nothing is as breathtaking as unobstructed views into the milky way with fingers intertwined with a loved one. Nights are branded as a dreamy experience by many of Atacama’s visitors, with stargazing a unique itinerary. The summer months in the planet’s driest desert get sizzling hot (about 24°C), whereas nights (5°C) keep constant low temperatures due to the desert’s low altitude.

The summer is the best time to visit the desert as travelers get lost staring at the constellations, and sunrise at El Tatio geyser is equally as breathtaking as streams of white steam wafting into the morning sky.
