Croatia and Montenegro are two of the jewels of the Adriatic Sea, complete with white sandy beaches, limestone cliffs, and a rich culture that’ll satisfy even the most intrepid adventurer.

But to make the most of these two majestic countries, you might be wondering when the best time to visit Croatia and Montenegro is…

And it’s a pertinent question.

Just a few hours away, an adventure awaits (more on our Bucket List Company trip shortly) and it’s actually a little bit different from our usual offering.

Because to make the most of Croatia and Montenegro, you need to make sure you fit in time for kayaking, snorkelling, white water rafting, hiking, biking, and enjoying plenty of sun and good food.

Did we miss anything?

When Is The Best Time For Sunny Weather in Croatia and Montenegro?

Sitting opposite the Italian peninsula, Croatia and Montenegro have a familiar southern mediterranean climate, which means the summer months from June to August are as pristine as you can get, weather wise.

Those familiar hot days are punctuated by a gentle sea breeze, with warm temperatures accompanied by clear skies and very little rainfall.

All of which add together to provide the ideal setting for kayaking, white water rafting, and all manner of water sports.

Sure, it might add an additional challenge when we’re biking and hiking – but this is a Bucket List trip, after all!

We’ve got trips running in June and September, which are the ideal months to head off on a busy, action-packed trip to Croatia and Montenegro without being caught in the very peak of the temperatures in July and August.

When Is The Best Time To Go Hiking In Croatia and Montenegro?

The advice for anything strenuous is always to avoid the very hottest months.

Of course, for cooler climates, the opposite is true too – somewhere in between the very coolest and very hottest months are always best, which is why the ‘shoulder’ seasons of Spring and Autumn are always so popular.

But for some trips, June can be as much of a shoulder month as September, hence why we’ve got trips running in both months.

It’s an ideal time to get the best of both worlds and enjoy the best scenery and weather on offer without risk of being caught in temperatures that might get that little bit too high to be too active.

Add to that the fact that there tends to be fewer crowds outside of your traditional ‘summer holiday’ months, and you get the benefit of more space to enjoy your experience.

That means you can enjoy the very best Croatia and Montenegro have to offer, including stunning National Parks, Plitvice Lakes, Krka, Drumitor and Biogradska Gora!

We’ll even be heading off for some hiking on day 6 and 7 of our 8-day trip, which you can find out a bit more (including where we’ll be going!) in our itinerary here.

When Is It Busiest in Croatia and Montenegro?

Croatia and Montenegro’s peak season, much like Spain, Portugal, Italy and many other busy European destinations, is during the summer months of July and August.

While June and September can be busy, they’re a drop in the ocean compared to the crowds you’ll find in the height of summer.

One thing we’ve always been cautious of at The Bucket List Company is delivering the best possible experience in everything we do. It’s why we offer our small group sizes and it’s why we tend to avoid any peak times where crowds can diminish your experience…

After all, it’s no use us all being in a tightknit group to make the best of our trip if everywhere we go is overcrowded, right?!

How Hot Does It Get In Croatia and Montenegro?

Croatia and Montenegro experience a Mediterranean climate, with hot and dry summers.

That means July and August can see temperatures hit 30°C and higher regularly, depending on the climate and pressure systems – heatwaves aren’t unheard of in recent years.

Expect June and September to offer temperatures not far off this, but generally sticking between 22°C and 30°C on a more consistent basis. You’re much less likely to see a heatwave hit while we’re there!

All in all, that it makes it a whole lot comfortable when we’re hiking or cycling. As for when we’re kayaking, white water rafting or generally near water, it’s still just as refreshing!
