If you’re an ambitious trekker wondering what to tick off the Bucket List next, our “why trek the Sahara” guide is definitely a quick read for you.

In here you’ll find out why trekking the Sahara DEFINITELY deserves a spot on your Bucket List, and what you need to know before you start your journey to Morocco. Buckle up, Bucket Lister, this is one exciting (and rather warm) adventure you won’t want to miss.

Why trek the Sahara – it isn’t just a boring mass of sand!

When someone mentions trekking the Sahara Desert, the first image that pops into most minds is an endless sea of monotonous sand dunes stretching into oblivion. The reality? It’s far from dull.

The Sahara is not just a flat expanse of sand but a diverse landscape featuring towering rock formations, mesmerising dunes that shift with the wind, lush oases, and even hidden lakes. Trekking through this vast desert reveals an ever-changing panorama, making every step a new and exciting experience.

The Sahara’s rocky terrains add a rugged charm to the landscape, offering a unique contrast to the soft, rolling dunes that define its iconic imagery. The dunes themselves, shaped by the wind into intricate patterns, create a seriously surreal environment. Yes, it’s VERY different from the mountains you might be used to trekking – but we don’t think that’s a bad thing. In fact, trekking the Sahara makes a fabulous change to the likes of Everest Base Camp or Kilimanjaro? (Did we really just say that?!)

Trekking the Sahara Desert is NOT easy, even more reason to add it to your Bucket List!

Trekking the Sahara is no walk in the park; it’s a challenge that beckons the most adventurous souls and pushes them to their limit. Well, kinda.

It’s not quite as hard as the likes of Ama Dablam or K2, but the extreme heat and challenging weather conditions can test the limits of even the most seasoned trekkers. Those are some pretty vast distances you’ll be covering too on a Sahara trek, which means meticulous planning and preparation are your friend.

Imagine walking through the shifting sands under the scorching sun, navigating through dunes that seem to have no end. It’s an experience that will leave you physically exhausted but mentally invigorated. The Sahara demands respect and preparation, making it a perfect addition to your Bucket List. From ensuring you have the right gear to acclimatising yourself to the desert climate, every step towards conquering the Sahara is a triumph in itself.

There's plenty of culture packed into what looks like an arid landscape at first sight.

Perhaps surprisingly, culture is yet another reason why trekking the Sahara is one of the best things we reckon you can do.

Contrary to its barren appearance, the Sahara is rich in cultural heritage. The nomadic Bedouin tribes, with their distinctive way of life, have called the desert home for centuries. Engaging with these communities provides a glimpse into a world where survival is an art. Bedouins are known for their hospitality, offering weary trekkers a chance to experience their traditional way of life.

If you’re looking for more reasons why you should trek the Sahara desert, surely dinosaurs will do it! Because the Sahara’s cultural tapestry extends far beyond human history. Did you know that this seemingly inhospitable desert was once home to dinosaurs too?! Fossil discoveries have revealed a prehistoric Sahara teeming with life. And you can unearth the mysteries of this ancient world as you traverse the desert, connecting with a past that goes beyond human existence.

The night-time is just as exciting as the day.

As the sun sets over the Sahara, a new spectacle unfolds as the night sky comes alive with an awe-inspiring display of stars. Far away from city lights, the Sahara offers a celestial panorama like no other. The crisp air and vast expanse create the perfect conditions for stargazing.

There’s really no better way to unwind after a hot day’s trekking than with a fresh mint tea beneath the most ludicrous starscapes you’ve ever seen!

Picture yourself under a canopy of stars, the Milky Way stretching across the darkness above, the tranquil silence of the desert night occasionally interrupted by the distant howl of a jackal. Camping under the stars in the Sahara is an experience that truly transcends the ordinary, offering a connection to the universe that is both humbling and exhilarating.

There's more wildlife than you might expect (and no, it's not just camels).

While camels may be the poster animals for the Sahara, the desert is home to a surprisingly diverse range of wildlife. From the iconic fennec fox with its large ears to the elusive addax antelope, the Sahara’s inhabitants have adapted to the harsh conditions in remarkable ways.

Birdwatchers will delight in spotting various species, including the majestic Houbara bustard. And there’s nothing quite like discovering the subtle tracks left by desert rodents or catching a glimpse of a wandering reptile when you’re in the thick of a scorching day of trekking (and possibly wondering what sort of mad blog made you book that flight).

Embarking on a Sahara trek introduces you to the resilience of life in this seemingly inhospitable environment and the Sahara’s wildlife really is a testament to nature’s ability to thrive against all odds. Just another layer of fascination to this epic adventure I guess!

For us, the question shouldn’t be “Why trek the Sahara?” but rather “Why not?” Beyond the daunting reputation lies a world of wonders waiting to be explored – a landscape that challenges, captivates, and leaves an indelible mark on those who dare to venture into its vast embrace.
